The HitchHiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Pgs 88-132

Quote analysis

  1. Quote: “Funny,” he intoned funereally, “how just when you think life can’t possibly get any worse it suddenly does.”
  2. I find it ironic, how the company tried to give the robots in the ship human like feelings and it back fires on them and they make they have human emotions to the extreme. They are always really depressed or they are always really happy, they never change depending on the situation.
  3. I think that this will come into the story late because when they meet robots in the future they may have the same problems. They could meet one that is really really mad at everyone and everything and this could lead to some injuries or some very unhappy people in the book.

Questions

Question 1. What do you like the noise and the light was at the end of the reading? Was it the improbability drive or was it the missiles hitting the ship?

Question 2. I think that Trillion is the girl that Arthur met in the bar. It doesn’t come out and say this but it kinda says it when Arthur knew who she was. How do you guys think?

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Pgs 44-88

Quote analysis

The very worst poetry of all perished along with its creator, Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of green bridge, Essex, England in the destruction of the planet earth.

I chose this quote because I liked how the author keeps referring back to the human race on earth to the worst race in the entire universe. Its like we today think of aliens as being gross creatures that want to take over everything, but this book and the author portray the human race as being gross creatures, its still aliens that want to take over, but some of it is contrasted.

This quote tells more about how you will see the rest of the universe treat Author and how they will see him. Author will continue to be called a human, in a bad way, and he will continue to be discriminated against by all the other creatures. Except Ford, Ford will probably be Author’s only friend.

Questions:

  1. What do you think the Improbability Drive is and how does it work?

2. What do you think about the Vogons and how they act?

Quote Analysis
1. Quote: "And can we also assume," said Ford, "that he's going to be staying here all day?"
"So?"
"So all your men are going to be standing around all day doing nothing?"
"Could be, could be..."
"Well, if you're resigned to doing that anyway, you don't actually need him to lie here all the time do you?"
"What?"
"You don't," said Ford patiently, "actually need him here."
Mr. Prosser thought about this.
"Well, no, not as such..." he said, "not exactly need..."
Prosser was worried. He thought that one of them wasn't making a lot of sense.
Ford said, "So if you would just like to take it as read that he's actually here, then he and I could slip off down to the pub for half an hour. How does the sound?"
Mr. Prosser thought it sounded perfectly potty.
"That sounds perfectly reasonable..." he said in a reassuring tone of voice, wondering who he was trying to reassure.
"And if you want to pop off for a quick one of yourself later on" said Ford, "we can always cover for you in return
"Thank you very much," said Mr. Prosser, who no longer knew how to play this at all, "thank you very much, yes, thats very kind..." He frowned, then smiled, then tried to do both at once , failed, grasped hold of his fur hat and rolled it fitfully round the top of his head. He could only assume that he had just won.

2. Response: I found this quote/page interesting because Ford Perfect basically utterly just confused Prosser so that he didn’t know what he was doing and why he was doing it. Also shows how the author wants to portray the human species in this book, as an inferior species to all other aliens in this book.

3. Significance: This quote, like I said in the response, shows how Author is going to be treated and looked at by all the other aliens. He is going to be looked at as less intelligent and the aliens are going to treat him as someone who they need not to affiliate themselves with. Author will probably be ignored through the entire book.

Questions

  1. What do you think Ford Perfect meant when he said ““If we’re unlucky,” said Ford grimily, “the captain might be serious in his threat that he’s going to read us some of his poetry first…”?
  2. How do you think Author will be portrayed as by the Vogons.
