Chapters 13-15

Quote #4- End of Chapter 15

Atticus and Jem were well ahead of us, and I assumed that Atticus was giving him hell for not going home, but I was wrong. As they passed under a streetlight, Atticus reached out and massaged Jem's hair, his one gesture of affection.

(This was when Jem, Dill, Scout and Atticus were walking back from the incident at the jail cell with the mob that included Mr. Cunningham. Scout and Dill were walking together behind Atticus and Jem, who were walking together)

Response

I thought that this was very kind of Atticus. Even though Jem and Scout should have done what they did and ran after their dad, they did anyway in fear that he might be in trouble. Atticus understood why they did what they did and knows that they only did it because they cared for Atticus. Jem was the most worried and that’s why he started the whole “rescue group”. Atticus only wanted to show Jem that he was glad they did what they did.

Significance

This part of the book has a lot to do with might happen later in the book. It mainly shows that Atticus is learning to understand that children and understand their ways. He understood that Jem and Scout were only worried; they weren’t looking to get in any trouble. So Atticus massaged Jem’s hair in a matter of affection to show he was glad that Jem had done what he had done, and Jem wouldn’t get in trouble. This is also the author’s way to show that everything and everyone is starting to change in the town and in Scout’s family because of the case.

Questions

How do you think the trial, once it starts, will affect the relationship between Scout, Jem and Dill?

Do you think that Atticus will when the trial? Why or why not?

1. This quote shows how grateful Atticus is for Jem's stubbornness. If Jem had gone home and taken Scout and Dill with him, Atticus probably would have gotten hurt one way or another. But because Jem stayed and disobeyed Atticus, it made Mr.Cunningham realize that Atticus is a father just like him and made the mob back off.

2. I do not think that the trial will affect their relationship at all. They all respect Atticus, and even if he loses the case, they all will still respect him because of his personality.

3. I think that Atticus will win the trial. He seems very experienced as a lawyer and the Judge seems to like Atticus, so I have a pretty good idea that the case will go to Atticus.

4. You spelled "win" wrong, you put down when.

i agree with your annaylis. atticus is seeing that the children werent looking for trouble but was looking to protect there father from trouble, and getting hurt.

well we read the chapter so im pretty sure atticus will win. since tom rombison has a bad arm it'd be hard for him to strangle and rape her. he is also probally right handed so beating her on the left eye will be hard as well. now proving that the father is a lefty and a drunk he might as well as did it.
